About Historical in Barcelona
For the first time visitor or the seasoned traveller, Barcelona has spectacular sights to discover. Take in the views over the city from the elevations of Mount Tibidabo at the back of the town or get lost in the labyrinthine lanes of the Gothic Quarter. A summer bike ride alongside the string of beaches that extend north of the city. A tour around the melting dreams that Gaudí built around the town at the beginning of the twentieth century. The great weather here means that outdoor activities are always possible, but even on cloudy days the sky over the sea takes on a wonderfully moody quality.
Of course, for those pressed for time, there are several hop-on and off sightseeing tours that offer a whistle stop tour around the most iconic sights.
Not only is Park Güell one of Gaudí's more ambitious projects, but it is free to visit (for now). Set above the northern neighborhood of Gràcia, it was originally built as a housing development, complete with market space and paths to connect dwellings. However, only two houses were ever added, and the site was acquired by the council for the purpose of conversion into a municipal garden.
Locals are passionate about many topics but nothing unites the majority of the inhabitants like their love of Futbol Club Barcelona. Tickets to matches are relatively easy to come by and can even be purchased at certain ATMs. If your visit doesn't co-incide with a home fixture, you can always take the stadium and museum tour at the world-famous Camp Nou.
A walk around the Gothic Quarter and the adjacent Born neighborhood will lead you around some of the most quaint corners of the old town. Be sure to check out the recently-renovated Santa Caterina Market along the way, which is also a top spot to eat or stop for a drink.
Tibidabo and Park Güell have been impressing visitors and locals alike for years, but the latest place to appreciate Barcelona from above is the Eclipse Bar at the sail-like W Hotel at the edge of the port. Don't flinch at the prices of cocktails, you're paying for an unrivaled view of the Catalan Capital.
