Explore the Unexplored. Harlem has the best hidden jazz haunts in the world. For the last 20 years, I've been chronicling that scene as it is beginning to re-claim its pivotal place in history.
In the 20's and 30's Harlem exposed the world to Big Band jazz and blues; in the 40's and 50's it was Bop and Latin Jazz; then soul, funk and R&B.
The world is now catching on to the newest crop of jazz greats starting with the startling international success of Gregory Porter & his band that formed in Harlem 5 years ago during jam sessions at the infamous, St. Nick’s Pub.
Musical explorations continue nightly at underground joints where tomorrow’s jazz giants are hard at work creating magic in the shadows. On this 5-hour tour we visit 3 hidden jazz haunts, seeking out the best talent performing that particular night.
I have been taking serious jazz aficionados and curious newcomers alike on Harlem musical adventures since the late 90’s. Now I invite you to join me on my nightly rounds to check out who’s blowing and to give you the opportunity to join the jam as well. Transportation and cover charges included in tour price.
We meet in the hotel district at 6:39PM and return there at the end of the tour around 11:30PM. Hotel pick-ups can be arranged ahead of time if you like.

Our tours always include thrilling live jazz and fascinating sightseeing. "This tour, hosted by New York jazz expert Gordon Polatnick, is the real deal for jazz buffs." ~ Brian Silverman, Frommer's New York City 2013 & New York City For Dummies "I'm not certain what makes this tour so memorable - whether it's Gordon's relaxed, friendly and knowledgable manner as a tour leader or whether it's because the experience takes you to places you would not contemplate negotiating yourself...Whatever, it's a professionally organised tour that enables you to experience Harlem's jazz and culture first hand ." ~N.
