Pepe Carvalho is a character created by the famous spanish novelist Manuel Vázquez Montalbán in 1972 .

The first novel featuring the 50-year-old gastronome-detective Pepe Carvalho is Yo maté a Kennedy (I killed Kennedy), followed by Tatuaje (Tattoo) in 1975 and La soledad del manager (The Angst-Ridden Executive) in 1977

Barcelona is his city. Although Carvalho is a great traveller and many of his adventures take place in other locations, the importance of the character has given to the Catalan capital that mythical literary city air that Carvalho so much loves in other cities, such as the Singapore of William Somerset Maugham.

There are many Barcelonas, and Carvalho knows them all but the centre of his life is in the labyrinthine squalor of the Barri Xino, setting for Genet’s Thief’s Journal, and in the Barri Gotic where the independent Catalan Kingdom created a nationalist consciousness.

We see endless times Carvalho to walk along the Ramblas departing from his office in Plaza Arc de Teatre to the stands of flowers and birds.
Sometimes he enters the beautiful Plaza Reial and sits in a cafe listening to his confidant Biscuter or reading the newspaper. He often goes to the market of the Boqueria, full of odors and colors, to buy something of which he is greedy.
He attends the cafe Trianon in plaza de Mandiargues and, above all, his favorite restaurant, House Leopoldo that sometimes betrays, sheltering himself to Casa Isidro, few meters from the Romanesque church of san Pau de Camp.

In the tour I'll show you these, and many others, fascinating corners...

I'm italian, I'm an historian and I have a great passion for Barcelona. I lived all over the world due to my job, from Chicago to Mumbai, from Milan to Amsterdam but some years ago I moved to Bcn and I'm still here, with my husband and my lovely dog. My favourite hobby is to find out the locations of famous novels or films located in Barcelona throughout the streets and the squares of the town. It would be fantastic to show you my routes and my literary tours, a fascinating experience that allow you to discover a different side of Barcelona. Full profile Leave a Review
