Full of natural wonders and historic landmarks, the area roughly called the North Woods is perhaps the most enjoyable part of the park. On this tour we will explore the area of Central Park roughly North of 101st Street, much of which is called the North Woods. This portion of the park was deliberately left more rugged by the park's designers. It is filled with wildlife, waterfalls, picturesque bridges, and very rustic scenery. Around the North Woods are the remains of several fortifications collectively called the Northern Forts that once defended New York City from the North, including the Blockhouse (the oldest building in Central Park, built in 1814), Fort Clinton, and Nutter's Battery. This tour will explore the area's wonderful scenery and discuss the history of the area as it evolved from a rugged, nearly impassible and fortified terrain into a picturesque part of Central Park. The tour also features a walk though the Conservatory Garden, a lovely set for three formal gardens whose flowerbeds, fountains, and manicured greenery provide a remarkable contrast to the unkempt nature of the North Woods. The tour will guide you though areas of the park often not visited by tourists who rarely venture this far North, and which are thankfully far less crowded that the more famous areas further south.

My name is John Semlak and I live in East Harlem in Manhattan. I would love to show everything that the great city of New York has to offer. From the side streets of Greenwich Village to the corridors of finance on Wall Street, from the melting pot of Queens to the brownstones of Brooklyn, I can offer an walking tour tailored to your interests. All the photos posted with my experiences are my own unless otherwise credited. My tours are walking tours unless otherwise noted. By far the best way to see New York City is on foot. Plus it's healthy. Most of my tours last at least two hours but we can tailor the tour to your schedule. My tours cover a variety of topics, from the city's history, arts, architecture, pop culture, and cuisine. I am a licensed tour guide with three 4 years experience and much more experience wandering the streets of New York. I speak English and fluent Russian and offer tours in both languages.
