Come spend time with an expat discovering biodiversity in "the other Hawaii". Famous for its sea turtle nesting season, Hawaii is also known for its lush mangrove forest and biodiversity right next to a growing tourist destination. Crashing waves on a black beach, olive ridleys come to nest between July and December each year. Come with an experienced guide not only to look for turtles but to experience life in a tranquil fishing village on the Pacific Coast of Guatemala.

Package includes: turtle walks at night, hatchery visit with baby turtle release, trip to the rivermouth and visits to neighboring villages. During the day, you will generally be free to relax or can opt for the following activities a la carte: birdwatching tours by boat in the canal, artesanal fishing, hammock and jewelry making lessons, and excellent home-cooked meals with fresh seafood for an additional charge, as this money would go to the local community. Let me customize your trip!

Activity offered October - January due to turtle season. As I customize trips for each person based on their interests, we can work together to make a fun weekend for you and your friends, with possibilities for longer stays and volunteering with various projects. The area is also looking for English teachers for the local community, we can perhaps provide housing in exchange. Spanish lessons can also be arranged.

I was born in Boston, MA and raised in southern California. I have been a traveler all her life. After college, I moved to Australia and then travelled through Europe. I have lived in SF, LA, DC and NY, among other places. I used to play music with several bands in New York and released 3 CDs. I then took up sailing with tall ships and cruised the East Coast and crossed the Atlantic Ocean and Panama Canal. I first came to Guatemala in 2007 to study Spanish in Antigua and stumbled upon a sleepy fishing village on the coast called Hawaii. I ended up staying there for three years and now call the beach my home. I started there as a volunteer in sea turtle conservation and wound up organizing two sea turtle festivals, including a surf tournament. I currently work in ecotourism up in Southeast Alaska for the summers and organize tours in Guatemala in the winters. I am also working on a distance-learning certificate in veterinary technology to assist with street dog population control and vaccinations and animal rescue. Full profile Leave a Review
