Shanghai's Jewish Ghetto

with Janny C.

Janny C.

For one hundred years, from 1850 to 1950, waves of Jewish immigrants-from India, Russia and Germany-had a significant impact on the economy and development of Shanghai.

The source of numerous books and documentaries, the Shanghai ghetto was an area of approximately one square mile in the Hongkou District of Japanese-occupied Shanghai and home to about twenty thousand Jewish refugees from Europe before and after WWII.

Walk the streets of the former Jewish neighborhoods where now local people live and have a chat with the Chinese who have spent most of their life time in that area, see the site of the Joint Distribution Committee, Jewish Shelter, local Chinese park with the Monument for Jewish Refugees, and the Ohel Moishe Synagogue (now theMuseum of Jews in Shanghai).

We will pass interesting shops, restaurants, small local birds and fish market, and a special buddist temple in the end of the tour to let you understand the buddhist rituals and practices.
