My name is Joseph C. Krause. I offer “backseat driver” tours of Detroit. You drive your own vehicle, and I hop in and guide you through The Motor City. Each tour is customized to your interests and background and covers the city’s history, its rise and fall as an industrial giant, the good and the bad, its past, present and future, and all of the great things that are often overlooked.

The bad things you’ve heard about Detroit? They're often true. But the good things you haven’t heard are also true.

The tour is very customizable. Some prefer to focus on history, and others on life in the city today. The tour encompasses all of greater downtown and typically also takes in a significant portion of the East Side, though there's plenty to see all over the city and the itinerary can be changed at any time.

I’ve been introducing people to Detroit for a decade. I grew up in the suburbs and moved to the city after developing an obsession with it while attending Wayne State University. There I studied Media, which lead me to work in film and music production. In addition to working on Hollywood productions, which itself involved plenty of backseat-driver tours, I worked on small scale films and videos including a documentary on the city. The character of that work carried over into my tenure as one of Detroit’s top hosts on Airbnb at "The Bumblebee House", where I have so far hosted over 100 travelers. I also help people to “live, work and engage” in Detroit as a tour guide for D:Hive, Detroit’s welcome center. This all runs parallel to directing the music collective Zelda and the Unibrows, which I co-founded in 1997. Full profile

We had the most fantastic tour with Joe recently - it was our first Vayable experience and a really good one. We decided to take Joe's tour as we thought that Detroit would be quite difficult to get to grips with: very few guide books have much to say and things obviously change quite quickly. We're so glad we did! Joe was a pleasure to spend time with; he knows the city really well having spent his whole life there; and he showed us a real variety of things that helped to give a really rounded view of the city. Joe was generous with his time and gave us some "homework" of great things to check out during the rest of our visit - which we duly did. He also gave us some really good food recommendations which we very happily checked out. All in all I would advise anyone thinking of visiting Detroit to do a tour with Joe. Having someone show you the positives, as well as the (all-too-often reported) negatives, of this fantastic city can make all the difference.
