Join me for a walking tour through the historic old town of Annecy and hear about the history of this crossroad of the Alps from the Romans to the Savoy Dukes.
We'll wander through the arcades of the old town beside the canals and if you organise for a Sunday morning there's the added bonus of the local food market.
Starting by the shore of the lake we'll visit the Lover's Bridge and hear about Annecy during Roman times. We continue through the old town visiting the Palais de L'Isle and the winding alleyways that lead up the chateau for a rooftop view of the city.
We talk about the Kingdom of Savoy and its turbulent history leading to the formation of modern Italy and also the history of Annecy during WWII and its role as a centre for the resistance.
On the way we'll be exploring lots of small, hard-to-find corners of the city and pointing out great places for lunch.
Although a Londoner born, I've been living in the beautiful Haute Savoie region of France for the past four years spending my time between Annecy and Geneva and enjoying the region's lakes, mountains and walks. I moved because the bread is nicer and the wine cheaper. I travel to Paris lots as well mainly for work and regularly skip out of meetings to enjoy the capital. Before settling down in France I enjoyed an itinerant life travelling around South America, the Pacific, across Canada and from China to the UK overland on the Trans-Siberian railway. My last adventure was Japan and Dubai in summer 2013 and off to Reykjavik for 2014. I spent a brief period setting up and running my own business guiding tourists around Bath, UK on literary walking tours and never quite lost that love of introducing visitors to my adopted country. On my own travels I benefited from some excellent local guides and now would love to return that service to anyone interested in discovering the corner of France and Switzerland that I am honoured to call home. I can offer trip planning particularly in the areas of: - 1) Discovering French-speaking Switzerland - from big science at CERN to the Montreux jazz festival, the cheese of Gruyere (and its connection with the Alien films!) or a trip around a chocolate factory. 2) Living it up in and around the French Capital, the "city of lights". 3) Visiting the French Alps, Vauban fortresses, white water rafting, cycling some classic étapes of the Tour de France or exploring secluded walking trails and hidden waterfalls. 4) Romantic getaways in Annecy, the "Venice of the Alps" - from dinner cruising on the lake to a Segway tour around the old town for two!
