Secret Berkeley Staircases Stroll

with Ellen J.

Ellen J.

Come see a side of Berkeley that you can't experience any other way except on foot. We'll hike up past amazing works of civic art, meander beside old hippie hideaways, gaze on architectural gems and palatial estates, and rest in beautiful gardens. The public and private spheres come together as we walk these city paths through the backyards of the Berkeley Hills. As we walk, I'll also entertain you with stories about the history of this place, with a special focus on the eccentric architect Bernard Maybeck and his role in the development of the Berkeley building vernacular. Have you ever seen an ancient Greek-inspired temple in the middle of a Eucalyptus grove? Now's your chance!

• 3 hours of walking and talking, much of it uphill. There will be opportunities to rest along the way.
• gourmet snacks
• amazing views of the San Francisco Bay

While this tour definitely caters to the physically active, I can adjust the route according to your level of fitness. The are paths all over the hills, and we can find the ones that best cater to you...And keep in mind that this isn't supposed to "exercise", it's a stroll that just happens to go uphill! It's not a race to the top!

Hi, My name is Ellen. I'm a foodie with a love for authentic, local experiences, and currently divide my time between San Francisco and the East Bay. I'm passionate about travel, so when I'm home, I want to be able to share as many of those experiences as I can with those from abroad. I speak fluent French and intermediate Spanish, so I can communicate with you in those languages if you want a non-English tour. I'm also a writer and musician, with an educational background in literature, art history, and ethnomusicology. I've written articles on travel, culture, urbanism and outdoor adventure, which have been published in a variety of magazines. I've also worked professionally as a tour guide in San Francisco. Unsurprisingly, my tours tend to focus on culture! And did I mention that I think the best way to travel is on foot? My first big trip after university was to walk 900km across Spain! So put on your walking shoes, and let's go for a stroll. Full profile Leave a Review
