Woodblock printing is a technique used in printing text, images and patterns used widely throughout East Asia and originating in China as a method of printing on textiles, and later, paper. As a method of printing on cloth, the earliest surviving examples from China date to before 220, and from Egypt to the 4th century.
Yinyi Wang, a brilliant Chinese artist with master degree of Print & Exlibris Research from the Fine Art of Shanghai University and the founder of Shanghai Fu Xian Zhai Exlibris Society, will open her block printing studio and exlibris gallery to guide us through creating our own block printing artwork. During this event, you will receive a full introduction to the process of relief printing using wood blocks and linoleum plates. You will learn how to carve printing blocks, apply ink, and print to paper. By the end of the course you will be able to create a one single-color or two-color editioned print and bring it home. You could also purchase some beautiful Exlibris prints during this visit, cash payment only.
In this introduction class, you will learn a block printing method you can easily use on your own with no expensive or special equipment. You could bring a simple graphic image in mind or on paper, if you do not have any idea, the instructor will guide you through. After a brief introduction and demo of the process, we will transfer our images onto plates and begin printing.
