Let's begin at the Astor Place cube across from the Starbucks at the Astor Place stop on the 6! I'll paint what the Village was like during the 60-80s and discuss Ginsberg, beatniks, Jazz, the War on Drugs and the heroin and AIDS crises. The we'll go to St. Mark's for--the 80's ness of it all. The Sock Man, Search and Destroy. Come see where Desperately Seeking Susan was filmed at Loves Saves the Day. Ian's where Prince got his Peach and Black. The inimitable Trash & Vaudeville--the place to get your goth on. We'll go by Pat Field's (costume designer for Sex in The City) old store with the option to go to the new one on the Bowery. We'll go by the old site of Coney Island High, the Continental, Niagara, the Pyramid Club (on A) see where the old punks, drag queens, goths, and club kids partied, shopped and hustled way before it was cool to be pierced and tattooed.
As a costume designer, performer and stylist I'd be happy to help you look around for clothes!
Part two: Gay town-Somewhere Over the Rainbow
We'll stop for a bite to eat at the famous Waverly Diner, then, we'll continue down West 8th Street past the magnificent Jefferson Market Branch of the NY Public Library links to images--which used to be a fire look out tower in the 1800's and later served as a courthouse (but is rumored to have been a women's prison). Then we'll go down Christopher Street and delve into the LGBTQ history of places like the Stonewall--where the riots took place, we'll stop at the Oscar Wilde Memorial Book Shop and further down Christopher stopping at Pieces, past the gay bars the Stonewall Inn, Duplex, the Monster, Rose's Turn, the souvenir shops and then either to the pier or further into the strip of Seventh Avenue where the Lesbian bars took root. And to top it off, dinner at Cowgirl!
*stopping for nibbles and drinks is optional and fun!
