Since I was a kid my favourite weekend tour was always Buçaco. I was always dragging my family to that fantastic battlefield. I was doing this because of my profound interest on military history. What can be more appealing than to have the biggest battlefield of Portuguese history just 25 km from home? A place in which almost 200.000 soldiers found their way in the morning of 27th of September, 1810.
However you don't have only a battlefield in Buçaco. You also have one of the most beautiful forests in Europe for centuries kept by the barefooted monks and one of the most beautiful hotels in the world.
Tour program is:
Picking you by car and heading to Buçaco.
A small break on the way for a coffee and Nata.
Visiting Buçaco military museum where you can see artifacts of the battle and have comprehensive information on it. After that a refreshing walk in the woods of Buçaco and entering to the convent of the barefooted monks.
Then you can see fantastic five star Buçaco hotel and its beautiful gardens.
Then we are heading to the highest point of the mountain to an observatory where you can see the entire region. (Cruz Alta)
After that we are starting with the battlefield tour by heading to Santo António do Cântaro by car where the battle begins.
Finally we are heading to the area of Sula and Moura area the place where the second part of the battle emerged.
During the trip, plenty of information and stories about that period will be told.
