Lisbon is steeped in history and tradition while constantly coming up with innovative ways of showcasing its many attributes. Whether you’re into chic shops or vintage classics; the mournful tones of traditional fado music or the latest beats; cutting edge contemporary architecture or historical buildings that chart the course of the city through the centuries, Lisbon offers all this and so much more.

Covering seven hills, the city has plenty of magnificent viewpoints, most of them with cafés or bars to relax in as you admire the River Tagus, the red-rooftops, majestic domes and patterned artwork of Lisbon’s pavements and squares.

Get wonderfully lost in the narrow cobbled streets of Alfama as you wander downhill from St George’s castle. Built in the time of the Moors, Alfama is one of the only neighbourhoods to have survived the 1755 earthquake which flattened Lisbon. The grid-like layout of the Baixa and the enormous Terreiro do Paço square are thanks to the Marquês do Pombal who recreated Lisbon from the rubble.
