About Art and Design in Paris

Art and culture are everywhere in Paris: in the métro all the exhibitions are listed; Sacré-Coeur sits in a Montmartre corner; the “Angel of the Bastille” can be spotted flying in the sky (best viewed on a sunny day), and so on. The Eiffel Tower, the great Gallery of Machines, the Grand Palais, and the Gare d'Orsay, all part of the World Fairs of 1889 and 1900, are also worth witnessing in this new era.

It’s not hard to see that Paris is one of the leading cities in the world when it comes to art and culture. Museums and monuments form a condensed and breathtaking artistic history of Europe and the world.

Local Customs

Whether it's to go and see the new aisle of the Louvre, street art, or to check out the last exhibition of the Musée d'Orsay on a Sunday with a girlfriend, Parisians acknowledge the variety and the richness that their city offers. They are proud of the culture of their beloved capital.

History

During the Roman occupation, Lutetia (now Paris), was a small town of a few thousand inhabitants on the left bank of the Seine.
In 1528 François the 1st moved to Paris with 280,000 inhabitants, making it the largest city in Europe. Artists followed after the King and this second phase of the Renaissance sprouted many monuments and works in the capital.

Politics & Economy

Bertrand Delanoë is a French politician from the Socialist Party and has been the mayor of Paris since 2001. Paris has become greener recently. The city has been developing green projects such as Vélib, the city's bike-share; the commissioning of the tram; and the pedestrian “reconquest” of the banks of the Seine. With a 2010 Gross Domestic profit of €572.4 billion (US$759.9 billion), Paris has one of the highest GDPs in the world after Tokyo, New York and Los Angeles.
