Top experiences in Rome
Everyone knows that the founding of Rome goes back to the very early days of civilization, around 753 BC. It is so old that it's known as "the eternal city". But what you probably don't know is that all Romans are children of a she-wolf (ie: a prostitute). What? No, that's not a mistake. Let me explain:
According to the famous legend of the origins of Rome, Romolus and Remus were the children of Rea Silvia (where "Rea" means guilty), priestess of the cult of Vesta who broke the chastity vow; she left her children in a basket abandoned in the Tiber river (yes, kind of like Moses).
A she-wolf found the basket containing the twins Romolus and Remus and suckled them. Because of this, Romolus found Rome and murdered his brother.
In Latin, the word "she-wolf" (in Italian, "lupa") means "prostitute", and the so called "lupanari" were special places dedicated to the mercenary sex.
So the symbol of Rome, the famous she-wolf suckling the twins, is a prostitute, and the foundation of Rome is the result of a murder. Interesting as a starting point to understand this complicated city, isn't it?
To be sure, the saying "when in Rome, do as Romans do" is referring to the incredible wealth of activities in present-day Rome, not the Rome of the past. So relax and enjoy the historical monuments in the center of the city: the Colosseum, the Roman Forum, the Pantheon or the Vatican with Saint Peter Basilica; or visit museums such as the Galleria Borghese with extraordinary collections. Soak in the sunlight on your face outside a café, and enjoy long lunch or dinner with good food and wine for a good price.
Discover elderly ladies and men chatting in Trastevere or in the Jewish Ghetto. Explore the sinuous trees and original monuments beside the Villa Borghese as you walk through the beautiful tree-lined streets. Don’t feel like going to a museum? That's fine, there's no need when it’s all outside on the streets!
Rome's architectural heirlooms are unmatched by those anywhere else. One visit and you're sure to be hooked by the splendor of the eternal city. The last advice: if you're not careful, you may fall in love with Rome.
