About San Juan
Picture yourself walking through the streets of Andalusia in southern Spain and you will get a sense of what strolling through this fortified city feels like. Founded in 1521 by Juan Ponce de León, San Juan is not only the capital of Puerto Rico but also the oldest city under United States jurisdiction and the second oldest city in the Americas. For many years considered the most important military outpost on the New World, the Spanish built a 18 foot thick wall to protect the San Juan bay, the city and it's inhabitants.
After coming out of Spanish rule in 1898 during the Spanish-American War, San Juan served as the epicenter of economic growth, expanding geographically to several adjacent neighborhoods or "barrios". Today San Juan is most populous city in the island with over 400,000 people calling the city their home. It offers visitors and locals alike a delightful mix of historical sites, shops and restaurants.
Even though the capital city continues to grow. You will find that most of it's treasures are located within the confines of the fortified area known as Old San Juan. The 500 year old spanish fortress of San Felipe del Morro, Fort San Cristobal, Casa Blanca and the Cathedral of San Juan Bautista are just a few of the main attraction you will see while roaming through the city's cobblestone streets.
